Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging symbolic elements in a way that influences and affects the senses, emotions, and/or intellect. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, photography, sculpture, and paintings. The meaning of art is explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics.

Traditionally, the term art was used to refer to any skill or mastery. This conception changed during the Romantic period, when art came to be seen as "a special faculty of the human mind to be classified with religion and science". Generally, art is made with the intention of stimulating thoughts and emotions.

What are the fine differences between art schools and universities with a good art program?
Q. I have researched quite a bit on the topic and the curriculum requirements are very similar. Other than the obvious such as the size of the student body etc., what are the finer differences between an art school such as RISD and a university like NYU with a renowned art program? (And I am talking visual arts.) I love art but I don't know if a small, specialized art college is right for me. Anyone have some information regarding this?

A. For both undergrad and grad school, RISD is considered the best art school in the nation and one of the best in the world. It's heavily focused on fine arts and design, although they do have other departments like liberal arts, maths and sciences (some majors are very math and science focused, like architecture and industrial design). They are located right next to Brown University (an ivy) and RISD students get to take classes there too. RISD takes an almost bauhaus approach to arts and design - not in style, but in educational technique: lots of time in studio and workshop, with some theory thrown in and in-class instructional time as well. Students really need to be devoted to go to RISD. Their freshman foundation year is considered the… [cont.]

Difference between Computer Arts: New Media and Graphic Design at Academy of Art University?
Q. I'm planning on going to the Academy of Art University in SF, but I'm stuck between whether I should take Computer Arts: New Media or Graphic Design. Could someone please tell me the difference? Also, if I do take Computer Arts:New Media, what type of career opportunities are there? I know obviously if I take Graphic Design, I become a Graphic Designer, am I right? Please help!

A. Hello! I'm a student at AAU and here's about as much as I know: New Media is part of the Computer Arts school, so you're going to learn more about web design and web graphics. You'll probably learn programs like Photoshop, Flash, After Effects Fireworks, Dreamweaver, etc. and probably some basic HTML, CSS, etc. Graphic Design is more traditional arts based, where you'll learn the principals of design and stuff like typology, calligraphy, print and package design. You can always change your major if you end up liking one more than the other. You can probably even float between the two and still be a graphic designer, but learn the tools of the new media trade.

When doing art, what is most important when deciding which skills to develop?
Q. Is it more important to do art revolving around subjects you find interesting, revolving around a certain area that not many people have ventured into, or revolving around something not necessarily what you find interesting but something you can excel with? I know this is kind of a stupid question because art means different things to different people I'm just looking for different opinions to gain personal insight and inspiration. Thanks.

A. If you are planning on selling your art, you need a unique look to make you stand out from the millions of other aspiring artists out there. I buy a lot of art, and I look for paintings and pottery where the artist's personality shows in the work, and where I feel he or she would be fun to know.
