Assemblage is an artistic process in which a three-dimensional artistic composition is made from putting together found objects.

The origin of the word (in its artistic sense) can be traced back to the early 1950s, when Jean Dubuffet created a series of collages of butterfly wings, which he titled assemblages d'empreintes. However, both Marcel Duchamp and Pablo Picasso had been working with found objects for many years prior to Dubuffet. They were not alone, alongside Duchamp the earliest woman artist to try her hand at assemblage was Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, the Dada Baroness, and one of the most prolific, as well as producing some of the most exciting early examples, was Louise Nevelson, who began creating her sculptures from found pieces of wood in the late 1930s.

In 1961, the exhibition "The Art of Assemblage" was featured at the New York Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition showcased the work of early twentieth century European artists such as Braque, Dubuffet, Marcel Duchamp, Picasso, and Kurt Schwitters alongside Americans Man Ray, Joseph Cornell and Robert Rauschenberg, and also included less well known American West Coast assemblage artists such as Wallace Berman, Bruce Conner and Edward Kienholz. William C Seitz, the curator of the exhibition, described assemblages as being made up of preformed natural or manufactured materials, objects, or fragments not intended as art materials.

A. You can think of assemblage art as a three dimensional collage using found objects. Found objects are objects that were not designed specifically for artistic purpose. You can still use artistic mediums and techniques in the assemblage piece, i.e. paints, inks, carving, drawing etc. but you want to focus on the use of found objects to create something original and make a statement (aesthetically, emotionally, politically, culturally, etc). You can certainly use colored drinking glasses in your assemblage. They can be classified as found objects because they are really made for another purpose - holding liquid for drinking. I think the part that you are having trouble with is how to connect or relate these broken pieces of glass to your… [cont.]

How can I preserve Peeps for an art project?
Q. I have some marshmallow Peeps I'd like to use in an assemblage sculpture, but I don't want to attract flies, ants, mold or other gross things. How can I preserve them for my project?

A. Hmm. I did some googling and came across this. Here's an exerpt: "They were spray varnished on all sides with approximately 5 coats of a clear polyurethane. Happily, we now know that spray varnish does not cause sugary substances like coated marshmallows to dissolve..." I posted the link below.

what are the best objects to make a contemporary assemblage sculpture with?
Q. looking for a list of objects that will make a good work of contemporary art

A. I'd suggest whatever objects catch your attention. That when assembled communicate an idea and aren't just a cluster of items for the sake of just making an assemblage.
